The South Beach Diet was created by Dr. Arthur Agaston, a Miami cardiologist who recommended the plan for his cardiac patients who needed to lose weight. His book describing the diet was published in 2003.

The primary basis for this diet is a focus on controlling the carbohydrates that you consume. There are both good carbs and bad carbs on southbeach diet, and sorting those out is the key to winning the war with your weight. Overall, the philosophy is this: too many bad carbs create something called an insulin resistance syndrome. That means that your body can't work with fat and sugar the way it is supposed too. Moreover, eating too many bad fats raises your risk of heart disease. To prevent both of these, southbeach suggests that you only eat good fats and good carbs. This change happens in three phases. During the two week long phase one, a dieter stays away from things like sugar, candy, bread, potatoes, fruit, cereals, and grains. You should lose between eight and thirteen pounds during the first phase. Phase two allows you to start adding whole grains and fruits back into your diet. Once you reach your optimum weight, you hit phase three, which allows you three servings of whole grain and three servings of fruit each day.

Some are organized by phases, others by meal and snack, and still others by type of food. From things like beef, pepper, and mushroom kabobs to easy chicken in wine sauce, you can probably find food you'll enjoy eating and cooking while you're on southbeach.

If you've heard about the South Beach Diet, you may also be familiar with the fact that there are many southbeach warnings out there. The diet lacks in the necessary fiber to make your body work correctly. Moreover, following the diet may subject you to ketosis, a fairly serious condition.
